Sensitive Skin Makeup

Yes, sensitive skin makeup does exist – you don’t have to go without makeup anymore!

Many people with sensitive skin believe that they cannot wear makeup. They find their skin breaks out or becomes irritated when applying any sort of color. This is especially distressing, because they are probably trying to hide redness or breakouts to begin with.

If you are suffering from sensitive skin, it is a sign of an imbalance in the body, and you will want to consider a lifestyle makeover to ease your symptoms. But you don’t have to go without makeup in the mean time!

If you are reacting to your makeup, most likely you are using poor quality products. (Be sure to not judge a product by its price – there are a lot of very expensive, poor quality makeup lines out there with irritating chemicals in them.) If your makeup contains chemical fragrance or preservatives, animal products, or petroleum based ingredients – get rid of it. These are common skin irritants.

Most quality product lines out there won’t actually be labeled as sensitive skin makeup. You will need to do your research. Look for mineral based makeup with no scent. Mineral based makeup has several advantages. Minerals are inert, so they won’t cause your skin to react. This also makes them anti-microbial, so your makeup won’t become a bacterial breeding ground. Mineral based makeup also tends to have more intense color that stays true, so you can use less and don’t need to re-apply. Plus it tends to be water resistant. Yes, it might cost a bit more, but it will last longer and will be less likely to irritate your skin. Those are a lot of great reasons to make the switch!

At a minimum, I recommend finding a mineral based foundation with an SPF of at least 15. I feel that a powder foundation is lighter and easier on highly reactive skin. Your foundation acts as a barrier between your skin and your environment, and is the most important piece of your makeup routine.

If you wish to make the investment, switch all your color to a mineral based line. There are several quality, mineral lines on the market. (My personal recommendation is below.) You can look for products at your health food store. You might also try a department store line, BUT ask lots of questions before purchasing: are there petro-chemical or petroleum based ingredients, are there artificial fragrances, does it have any SPF, does it contain animal products, can I return it if it irritates my skin?

Remember, sensitive skin is the result of many influences on your body, and you will want to consider many factors when seeking a solution. But the products that you put on your face play a large part in contributing to or solving your sensitive skin issues. Make sure your makeup not only helps you look more beautiful, but is healthy for your skin, too!

My personal recommendation

I love a line of color from Arbonne, International. All of their color is mineral based, it goes on beautifully, stays on, isn’t tested on animals, doesn’t contain animal products, and doesn’t irritate my skin. They offer a 45 day money back guarantee, so you can return it if you don’t like it. It’s the perfect sensitive skin makeup for me!
