I first started struggling with sensitive skin in my late teens. I would get hive like bumps that I actually thought were the result of bug bites. As I’ve learned more about my body, I realize that they were reactions to offensive items in my diet.
Over the next several years, my skin became more and more reactive. I developed an extreme sensitivity to wind and cold. This was particularly unfortunate, because I was an avid outdoor enthusiast, especially loving snowboarding. I would come home from a day on the ski slopes with red, blotchy, irritated skin, that would peel for several days afterwards.
The skin on my body had become dry, flaky and itchy. My hands, especially around my cuticles, would crack and bleed.
I had been using a department store brand of skin care when I first began to develop sensitive skin. Fortunately, I recognized how horrible the ingredients in these products were. I went on to try several different high end brands, including more natural lines. I tried organic lines from the health food store, and even tried making my own skin care for awhile.
The solution for me finally came through a combination of supplements, diet adjustment and a skin care line from a company called Arbonne. I take a variety of vitamins, minerals and an Omega fatty acid supplement. Although I am sometimes inconsistent, my diet limits intake of cow’s milk dairy products, processed wheats, and meat. The skin care I use nourishes and protects my skin, so it is bright, clear, and most important – not over reactive!
I can once again enjoy being outside in the cold weather, and don’t have to run inside if the wind is blowing!
